10 Team Single Elimination Bracket

Ten teams sits awkwardly between eight and sixteen, and the bracket shows it: the draw is built at sixteen slots and six of them are empty. Those six byes go to seeds 1 through 6, so more than half the field skips the opening round and only four teams play in it.

That lopsidedness is worth thinking about before you commit. If the ten teams are close in strength, a round robin or a double elimination will feel much fairer, because a single elimination at this size gives four teams one match and six teams a free pass.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

Why there are 6 byes

A knockout bracket has to halve cleanly every round, so it is built at the next power of two above the field. 10 entrants are drawn into a 16 slot bracket, which leaves 6 slots empty. Those go to the top seeds, so seeds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 sit out the opening round and enter in round two. If you would rather the byes fell at random, shuffle the seeds before generating.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many byes are in a 10 team bracket?
Six. A sixteen slot bracket has six places left over, and they are awarded to seeds 1 through 6, who enter in the second round.
Is single elimination a good format for 10 teams?
It is the quickest, at nine matches, but six of the ten teams get a bye and only four play a knockout match first. If fairness matters more than speed, ten teams works better as a round robin or a double elimination.
