12 Team Single Elimination Bracket

Twelve is one of the better non-power-of-two fields. The bracket is drawn at sixteen, which leaves four byes, and they go to seeds 1 through 4. The remaining eight teams play a full opening round, and by the quarter-finals the bracket is back to a clean shape.

This is a common size for a one day event: eleven matches, and only four teams sitting out at the start. Give the byes meaning by seeding honestly, or shuffle the seeds if you would rather nobody could argue about who earned the rest.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

Why there are 4 byes

A knockout bracket has to halve cleanly every round, so it is built at the next power of two above the field. 12 entrants are drawn into a 16 slot bracket, which leaves 4 slots empty. Those go to the top seeds, so seeds 1, 2, 3 and 4 sit out the opening round and enter in round two. If you would rather the byes fell at random, shuffle the seeds before generating.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How does a 12 team bracket work?
It is a sixteen team bracket with four empty slots. Seeds 1 to 4 receive byes and enter at the quarter-finals, while seeds 5 to 12 play a first round to join them.
How many matches are in a 12 team single elimination bracket?
Eleven, because every match eliminates exactly one team and twelve teams have to become one. A third place play-off makes it twelve.
