12 Team Double Elimination Bracket

Twelve teams are drawn into a sixteen slot winners bracket, so seeds 1 through 4 get byes into the second round. The losers bracket is shaped to match, which is why its first round is empty and the drop-ins start a round later.

Twenty two matches is a full day, but the format earns it at this size. With twelve teams a single elimination would send half the field home after one match; here everyone gets at least two, and a team that loses early can still play its way to the grand final.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

Why there are 4 byes

A knockout bracket has to halve cleanly every round, so it is built at the next power of two above the field. 12 entrants are drawn into a 16 slot bracket, which leaves 4 slots empty. Those go to the top seeds, so seeds 1, 2, 3 and 4 sit out the opening round and enter in round two. If you would rather the byes fell at random, shuffle the seeds before generating.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many matches are in a 12 team double elimination bracket?
Twenty two. Every team except the champion must lose twice, and each match hands out exactly one loss.
Do byes work differently in double elimination?
The winners bracket byes work the same way, going to the top seeds. The losers bracket then has a round with nobody in it, because those seeds cannot have lost yet, so it is skipped.
