16 Team Double Elimination Bracket

Sixteen teams in double elimination is the backbone of competitive tournament play, from fighting games to disc golf to bar leagues. The field fills the winners bracket exactly, so there are no byes, and the losers bracket alternates between pairing off survivors and absorbing the next batch of teams dropping down.

Thirty matches is the commitment. On two stations that is a long day; on four it is an afternoon. The usual compromise is to run the winners bracket a round ahead of the losers bracket, so the teams dropping down always have somewhere to land.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many matches are in a 16 team double elimination bracket?
Thirty. Fifteen teams have to be eliminated and each needs two losses, which is thirty losses, one per match.
How many rounds does a 16 team double elimination take?
Four winners bracket rounds, six losers bracket rounds and the grand final. The two brackets run in parallel, so the day is shorter than the round count suggests.
