Eight teams in double elimination is the format most competitive brackets settle on. A first loss drops you into the losers bracket rather than out of the event, so every team is guaranteed at least two matches and one upset cannot end a good run.

The cost is length: fourteen matches against the seven a single elimination would take, and the losers bracket runs alongside the winners bracket, so the schedule interleaves. Plan for roughly twice the matches and slightly less than twice the time, because both brackets can run at once when you have the stations for it.

How long it takes
