9 Team Single Elimination Bracket

Loading…

Nine is the awkward one. Crossing into a sixteen slot bracket for a single extra team leaves seven empty places, so seven of your nine teams get a bye and exactly one first round match is played. Seeds 8 and 9 meet; everybody else waits.

If that reads as unfair for your event, it probably is. Nine teams makes a much better round robin than a knockout: thirty six matches is a lot, but two groups of four and five, or a straight league played over several weeks, gives every team a real schedule instead of one play-in and seven byes.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

Why there are 7 byes

A knockout bracket has to halve cleanly every round, so it is built at the next power of two above the field. 9 entrants are drawn into a 16 slot bracket, which leaves 7 slots empty. Those go to the top seeds, so seeds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 sit out the opening round and enter in round two. If you would rather the byes fell at random, shuffle the seeds before generating.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many matches in a 9 team single elimination bracket?
Eight: one first round match, then four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the final. A third place play-off makes it nine.
How many byes with 9 teams?
Seven. A sixteen slot bracket has seven empty places and they go to seeds 1 through 7, leaving seeds 8 and 9 to play the only opening match.
What is a better format for 9 teams?
A round robin, or two groups feeding a small knockout. Seven byes out of nine teams means most of the field waits through a round that barely exists.
