5 Team Single Elimination Bracket

Loading…

Five is the most lopsided small bracket there is. It has to be drawn at eight slots, which leaves three empty ones, so three of your five teams skip the opening round entirely and only two actually play in it. Seeds 1, 2 and 3 wait while seeds 4 and 5 fight for the last semi-final place.

That is unavoidable arithmetic rather than a flaw in the draw, but it is worth deciding whether it is fair for your event. If the five teams are evenly matched, a round robin is the better answer: ten matches, everybody plays four, and nobody sits out a round they did not earn.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

Why there are 3 byes

A knockout bracket has to halve cleanly every round, so it is built at the next power of two above the field. 5 entrants are drawn into a 8 slot bracket, which leaves 3 slots empty. Those go to the top seeds, so seeds 1, 2 and 3 sit out the opening round and enter in round two. If you would rather the byes fell at random, shuffle the seeds before generating.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many matches are in a 5 team single elimination bracket?
Four: one play-in, two semi-finals and the final. A third place play-off makes it five.
Who gets the byes with 5 teams?
Seeds 1, 2 and 3. An eight slot bracket has three empty places and they go to the top three seeds, so only seeds 4 and 5 play in the first round.
Is a bracket or a round robin better for 5 teams?
A round robin, in most cases. Five teams is ten matches, everybody plays four, and it avoids three of the five sitting out the opening round.
