Chess Club Tournament Bracket Generator

A small chess section is traditionally an all-play-all: six, eight or ten players, everybody plays everybody, ranked on points. That is exactly a round robin, and it is the format this tool is best at for chess. Eight players is twenty eight games over seven rounds, which is a club season rather than an evening.

Be aware of the limit before you start. Larger chess tournaments use the Swiss system, where pairings are recalculated each round to match players on similar scores, and this generator does not do Swiss pairings. For a club section up to about ten players a round robin is the standard and better answer anyway; above that, a Swiss pairing program is the right tool.

Which format to run

Round robin for a club section of ten players or fewer, ranked on points. Knockout for a quick one-night blitz event. For a large open, use Swiss pairings instead: this tool does not produce them.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of boards you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

Does this do Swiss system pairings?
No. It draws round robin, single elimination and double elimination. Swiss pairings are recalculated each round from the current scores, which needs dedicated pairing software.
What is the best format for a small chess club tournament?
An all-play-all round robin, up to about ten players. Everybody plays everybody, the table settles it, and no one is knocked out after one bad game.
How many games in an 8 player chess round robin?
Twenty eight, over seven rounds of four games. Each player plays the other seven once.
