A pub darts night is a bracket and a queue for the board. Sixteen players in double elimination is thirty matches, and at a quarter of an hour each that is five hours on one board and half of that on two. The board count, not the entry list, is the number that decides whether a format is realistic.

Darts also has an unusually wide spread of ability in one room, which is the argument for double elimination over a straight knockout. A beginner drawn against the best thrower in the pub in round one has bought a drink and thrown nine darts. The losers bracket at least gives them a second match against somebody nearer their own level.

Which format to run

Double elimination on two boards or more. Single elimination on one board, or the night will not finish. Round robin for a group of six or fewer, which is what a small league night usually wants anyway.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of boards you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

What format is best for a pub darts tournament?
Double elimination when you have two boards or more, so a beginner drawn against the best player still gets a second match. Single elimination on one board, so the night actually ends.
How many dartboards do I need for 16 players?
Two is the practical minimum. Sixteen players in double elimination is thirty matches, about two and a half hours on two boards and five on one.
Can I record legs rather than match wins?
No. The bracket records who won the match. Keep leg scores on the printed sheet if your league needs them for a table.
